The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja has paid a condolence visit to the wife of Late former Chief of Army Staff, Major General Chris Alli.
A statement by the Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu said General Lagbaja paid the condolence visit to the widow, Mrs Dorothy Chris Alli, and other family members at his Osborne Foreshore Estate residence in Ikoyi, Lagos South West Nigeria.
Gen Lagbaja, who was accompanied by some top brass of the Nigerian Army, was at the residence on Wednesday 22 November 2023, to commiserate with the widow of the deceased Army Chief who was also one time National President, Nigerian Army Officers' Wives Association (NAOWA).
Speaking during the visit, the COAS described the demise of General Alli as shocking and a colossal loss, not only to the Nigerian Army, but also to the entire Armed Forces of Nigeria and the nation at large. He extolled the virtues of the late former COAS, describing him as an astute, forthright visionary military leader, whose significant contributions to the development of the Nigerian Army and the defence of the nation remains undiluted in the institutional memory of the Nigerian Army.
He disclosed, that the Nigerian Army will work hand in gloves with the family of the deceased to accord him a befitting burial and assured the family of the Nigerian Army's support, whenever the need arises.
Responding on behalf of the family of the Late COAS, rtd Captain Shuaibu Salawana expressed appreciation to the COAS and the entire Nigerian Army for the timely condolence visit and concerns for the deceased's family.
3 Days Mourning by Nigerian Army Declared
Recalled that the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja declared a three day period of mourning, starting Monday 20 November 2023 in honour of the Late former Chief of Army Staff, rtd Major General Chris Alli, following his disheartening demise on Sunday 19 November 2023.
During the time, all Nigerian Army formations and units were directed to hoist their flags at half-mast, as a symbol of collective grief and respect. The directive also mandates all personnel to wear a black hand band in remembrance of the late former COAS.
Major General Chris Alli dedicated his life to serving the nation through the Nigerian Army with indefatigable commitment and professionalism in the defence of our nation. In this time of grief, the Nigerian Army says it stands in solidarity with the family, friends and loved ones of the late Maj Gen Chris Alli.
The Nigerian Army also charges all personnel to adhere strictly to these instructions, as a mark of honour and respect for our fallen hero. The period of mourning is an opportunity for all to reflect upon his accomplishments and the sacrifices made by our gallant soldiers in defence of the nation.
Recall that Maj Gen Mohammed Chris Alli, a former Chief of Army Staff, Nigerian Army, passed in the early hours of Sunday 19 November 2023, after a brief illness at the Military Hospital Lagos. All Nigerian Army formations and units across the country are currently on a three day mourning of the late Army Chief by hoisting the Nigerian Army flag in half-mast and wearing a blackband.
