Nigeria's President Grants Full Authority To Defence Headquarters To Bring To Justice Killers of Military Personnel

The President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu has granted full authority to the Defence Headquarters and Chief of Defence Staff to bring to justice anybody found responsible for the unprovoked killing of military personnel during a rescue mission in Okuama Community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.

In a statement signed by the President, he said members of the nation's armed forces are at the heart and core of our nationhood, therefore any attack on them is a direct attack on the nation. He said the wicked act is unacceptable by all standards.

The President recalled that on Saturday morning, the Nigerian people and himself woke up to the dreadful news of the unprovoked killing of the nation's brave military personnel during a rescue mission in Okuama.

The incident occurred on Thursday, March 14, 2024, when the troops, responding to a crisis between Okuama and Okoloba communities in Delta State, were ambushed and a Commanding Officer, two Majors, one Captain, and twelve soldiers sadly lost their lives. One civilian was also killed.

As the Commander-in-Chief, he said he joins all well-meaning Nigerians and the men and women of the armed forces to mourn and express his profound grief over the needless death of our gallant soldiers.

He extend his profound condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers, their colleagues, and their loved ones and affirmed that the military high command is already responding to this incident. The President said the cowardly offenders responsible for the heinous crime will not go unpunished.

This incident, according to the President, demonstrates the dangers faced by our servicemen and women in the line of duty as he salutes their heroism, courage, and uncommon grit and patriotism.

He called on the nation to constantly remember and honour all those who have paid the ultimate price to keep the countr safe, strong, and united. The officers and men who died in Okuama community have joined the pantheon of great men and women who gave their all, with honour, in the service of the fatherland, the President stated.

He therefore pledged that his government will not relent until peace and tranquillity is achieved in every part of Nigeria.
May God continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria and keep members of our armed forces safe.
