Nigerian-born academic and President of State University of New York at Oswego, Peter O. Nwosu, has been appointed to the Presidents’ Leadership Council of the Educational Credit Management Corporation (ECMC) Foundation, expanding his role in shaping higher education policy and access in the United States.

The council, convened by the foundation, brings together university leaders to develop strategies that improve postsecondary success for underserved populations and strengthen pathways to economic and social mobility.
Nwosu, in a statement issued by the Director of Communications, Office of Communications and Marketing at State University of New York at Oswego, Tim Nekritz, said his participation aligns with the mission of public universities to expand access and drive transformation.
“Providing access and pathways for transformation are at the heart of the mission of SUNY Oswego and other public universities and colleges. The ECMC Foundation is an important champion of this cause,” he stated.
The appointment comes as U.S. higher education institutions confront widening access gaps, funding pressures, and evolving workforce demands. The council is expected to focus on collaborative solutions to improve credential completion and student outcomes, particularly for those furthest from opportunity.
Alongside the leadership appointment, Nwosu has contributed to national academic discourse through two chapters in The Chief Academic Officers Handbook, published by Johns Hopkins University Press in collaboration with the Association of Chief Academic Officers.
His contributions, titled “Leading Institutional Transformation” and “Developing Your Bench: The Role of the Chief Academic Officer,” draw on his leadership experience across institutions including Herbert H. Lehman College and Clark Atlanta University.
In the publication, Nwosu argues that institutional transformation requires structural realignment, leadership clarity, and a sustained focus on student outcomes.
“Institutional transformation requires courageous leadership and involves realigning structures, culture, and business models to deliver equitable increases in outcomes and educational value,” he wrote.
He further emphasized the need for clear problem definition, framing institutional challenges as opportunities to advance mission delivery and long-term impact.
The approach reflects ongoing reforms at SUNY Oswego, where the Vision 4040 strategy targets expanded academic output and stronger alignment with regional workforce needs through institutional restructuring and innovation.
The dual milestones position Nwosu within a network of policy and academic leaders shaping the future of higher education, particularly in access, institutional transformation, and student success.
