The Nigerian Army has expressed its willingness to receive ideas and opinions from the various segments of the society that will impact the development of the country especially on matters of security.
The Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja stated this at a 2-day Round Table discussion on “Asymmetrical National Security Challenges, the Army and National Development” organised by the Nigerian Army Resource Centre (NARC) in collaboration with the Development Specs Academy (DSA) held in Abuja.
General Lagbaja called on the various stakeholders at the national development discuss to deliver practical solutions that are implementable especially as it regards national security interest. He also applauded the organisers, emphasizing that the Nigerian Army supports the innitiave .
"I am glad that the roundtable is not just holding but also attracting credible individuals from key stakeholder organisations that have what it takes to offer ovhectivs interventions on National security and developmental issues"
"My appeal to Nigerians is that they continue to support the Nigerian Army as it works to attain the peace that is desired and continue to provide the intelligence that will also help to enhance Troop's effectiveness"
Earlier, the Director General Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Major General Garba Wahab rtd has stated that it is imperative that Nigeria to drive solutions for its problems locally.
General Garba Wahab emphasized that solutions for Nigeria's problems are in the hands of Nigerians.
The Executive Director, Development Specs Academy DSA, Professor Okey Ikechukwu stated that the Nigerian Army has continue to contain threats such as farmer herders clashes, banditry, oil theft amongst others with a multifaceted approach, in collaboration with sister services head on.
According to him, the historical, combination of kinetic and non kenetic approaches gives better and it has become pertinent to apply a whole of society approach in tackling these challenges.
Professor Okey in profering solutions said "We require citizens support, citizens engagement, restrictive justice initiatives, effective border management, skill acquisition programs, intensive agricultural seems inclusive governance and effective poverty alleviation"
He applauded Nigerian Army's commitment and outstanding dedication to duty in the face of all the security challenges as it continues to demonstrate excellence in safeguarding the nation and it's citizens.
The Director General, Voice of Nigeria, Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace in a presentation emphasized the importance of national interest reporting and getting the Nigerian Army to be position and be perceived well in the society by patriotic media organisations.
He pointed out that the media space has expanded giving birth to the issue of fragmented audiance while the biggest challenge for the Nigerian Army and other agencies become winning the hearts of the people.
"The Army must seize the high ground of narrative the way it seized the high ground of battle.
They must be deliberate about how they share their stories, the Army needs more advocacy that can defend and uphold its image while the command and cotrol structures may be a limitation for the Nigerian Army in terms of timeliness of dissemination of information, chain of command"
He recommeded that every military deployment and operation needs to have a media plan around it, as well as a skilled strategic communicator.
The 2-day Round Table discussion on “Asymmetrical National Security Challenges, the Army and National Development” organised by the Nigerian Army Resource Centre (NARC) in collaboration with the Development Specs Academy (DSA) ends on Tuesday 25th, June 2024 and the issues raise are expected to form part of solutions to national problems.
