Students Gripped By Fear As WAEC Withholds 11.92 Percent of 2024 Examination Results

A large number of students across the country have been gripped by fear following the news from WAEC that a large percentage of results have been withheld.

Some of the students who reacted anonymously to the results said they were afraid to even go through the process of checking their results because of the large number that are said to have been withheld by the examination body.

One of the students said even though she was confident of what she wrote in her examination, it gives her anxiety to even sleep after the news broke and prefers that someone else checks the result and tell her.

Some lament over the reaction of the parents if their results does not come out good and clean.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) announced on Monday that the results of 11.92 percent (215,267) out of a total of 1,805,216 candidates that sat for the exam have been withheld due to examination malpractice.

The examination body released the results to candidates on Monday, August 12, 2024 with WAEC revealing that out of the 1,805,216 candidates that sat the examination, 73.79 percent achieved credit and/or above in at least five subjects.

According to the head of WAEC, Nigeria, Amos Dangut explained that out of 1.8 million students who sat for the examination, 902,328 (49.7 percent) were males and 912,016 females (50.3 percent).

The examination was held in Nigeria, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.

Dangut pointed out that some students were caught using mobile phones during examinations and organised cheating are under investigation adding that decisions on the cases will be communicated to the affected candidates through their schools.
