According
to a statement issued by the African Union Special Envoy on Climate and
Security, Ambassador Ngozi Chikere, rising temperatures, desertification,
and resource scarcity are directly linked to escalating tensions in fragile regions,
threatening both national stability and regional cooperation.
The AU
Envoy highlighted that communities dependent on agriculture and pastoralism are
most vulnerable, noting that climate-induced migration and competition over
dwindling resources have intensified local conflicts in the Sahel, Horn of
Africa, and Lake Chad Basin. She emphasized that coordinated early warning
systems, conflict-sensitive climate adaptation policies, and sustainable
resource management are critical to mitigating emerging threats.
Fact-Check And Background Context
The UN
Environment Programme and UN Security Council have increasingly recognized
climate change as a threat multiplier, linking environmental degradation to
armed conflicts, forced migration, and food insecurity. African countries
hosting millions of internally displaced persons face compounded security and
humanitarian challenges.
The AU
recommended immediate investment in regional climate security mechanisms,
integration of climate risk in peacebuilding agendas, and strengthened
collaboration with international partners to prevent climate-induced conflicts.
