Location: Abuja, Nigeria
According to a staement by the Director Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the attack followed the firm rejection by residents of Woro
community of an attempt by terrorists to conduct ideological preaching and
indoctrination within the village. The AFN noted that the community’s refusal
to submit to extremist coercion reflected a broader pattern of resilience increasingly
demonstrated by Nigerian communities confronted by violent groups.
Military authorities disclosed that
following the initial threat, security agencies were promptly alerted and
troops were deployed to dominate the general area through robust patrols,
surveillance and other protective measures sustained over a two-week period.
Despite these efforts, the terrorists reportedly returned weeks later to target
defenceless civilians in a reprisal attack intended to instil fear and
terrorise surrounding populations.
The Defence Headquarters expressed
solidarity with the families of victims and communities affected, noting that
similar attacks on civilians defending their way of life continue to underscore
the brutality and ideological intolerance of terrorist groups operating within
the country.
Reaffirming its position, the DHQ
called on all Nigerians to remain steadfast in their faith in the Constitution,
their personal beliefs and the shared values that bind the nation together,
stressing that unity and collective resilience remain Nigeria’s strongest
defence against extremist violence. Citizens were urged to resist all forms of
ideological indoctrination, intimidation and coercion by violent groups seeking
to impose distorted belief systems through terror.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria
reiterated their commitment to protecting lives and property nationwide, while
calling for strengthened cooperation between citizens and security agencies.
The DHQ assured that military operations, in collaboration with other security
institutions, will continue to be intensified to identify, track and bring to
justice those responsible for the Woro attack and other acts of terrorism
across the country.
FACT-CHECK & BACKGROUND CONTEXT
Kaiama Local Government Area, located in northern Kwara State, has in recent years experienced spillover security threats linked to extremist movements operating across parts of the North Central and North West regions, exploiting remote communities for recruitment and ideological expansion.
The attack highlights the growing importance of community resistance to extremist indoctrination and reinforces the role of civil-military cooperation in preventing the spread of violent ideologies beyond traditional conflict zones.
Security operations across affected
border communities are expected to be reviewed and reinforced, with
intelligence-led actions focused on dismantling extremist cells and preventing
retaliatory attacks on civilian populations.
