🇳🇬 COAS Expands Soldiers' Housing, Deepens Soldier-First Welfare Strategy With 110 New Homes

 

The Nigerian Army has expanded its personnel welfare infrastructure with the commissioning of 110 new family housing units at Muhammadu Buhari Cantonment, reinforcing the Chief of Army Staff's Soldier-First philosophy as a strategic investment in morale, operational readiness and long-term force effectiveness.

The initiative reflects the Army's continued emphasis on welfare as a force multiplier as the housing project demonstrates the Service's commitment to providing quality accommodation for personnel as part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening operational capability through improved living conditions.

Commissioning the estate at the Muhammadu Buhari Cantonment, Giri, Abuja, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, said decent accommodation remains fundamental to building a motivated and combat-ready force. He stressed that soldiers who enjoy stable living conditions alongside their families are better positioned to remain focused on their duties and respond effectively to national security responsibilities.

The newly completed estate comprises 110 housing units constructed by the Directorate of Procurement (Army). According to the Army, the project consists of 52 buildings across 21 blocks with 10 modern architectural designs, providing one- and two-bedroom apartments for 80 junior soldiers alongside three-bedroom flats and twin houses for 30 Senior Non-Commissioned Officers. Each unit is equipped with essential residential facilities designed to improve comfort and family life.

During the ceremony, the Director of Procurement, Major General Sadisu Yakasai, urged beneficiaries to properly maintain the facilities to preserve their long-term value, while the Commander, Army Headquarters Garrison, Major General John Lar, commended the COAS for prioritising junior personnel and encouraged families to protect the estate as their own community.

The commissioning further underscores the Nigerian Army's sustained investment in welfare infrastructure under the Soldier-First culture, recognising that improved personnel wellbeing directly contributes to professionalism, resilience and operational effectiveness across all theatres of deployment.
