The Nigerian Army (NA) has affirmed its unwavering commitment to providing continuous support for the successful execution of the upcoming 2023 census by the National Population Commission (NPC).

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja,  made this announcement on Thursday, August 10, 2023 when the the Chairman of the National Population Commission, Honorable Nasir Isa Kwarra, along with the Board of Commissioners and Directors paid a visit to the Army Headquarters in Abuja .

Highlighting the Nigerian Army's readiness to assist the commission in conducting the 2023 census, COAS Lagbaja ensured that the NA would furnish essential backing, including the deployment of troops and robust security measures, to ensure the census's smooth execution. He affirmed, "The NA stands ready to provide comprehensive security and support to the commission's personnel, facilitating unrestricted access to NA Barracks across various formations and units."

During the meeting, Honorable Nasir Kwarra extended congratulations to the Army Chief on his appointment and commended the Nigerian Army for its efforts in addressing the nation's security challenges. Stressing the pivotal role of the NA in the forthcoming 2023 census, Kwarra emphasized the necessity of updating COAS Lagbaja about the ongoing preparations for the census. He sought collaboration with the military in security-related aspects during the census exercise.

Kwarra characterized the NPC as a constitutionally mandated entity entrusted with the responsibility of collecting, analyzing, and disseminating population and demographic data within the country. He underlined that the commission had already completed the enumeration and demarcation of the entire nation into smaller units. This demarcation, according to Kwarra, aims to facilitate the efficient allocation of human and material resources to specific regions for census purposes.
