Ademola Lookman became the hero of the day as Nigeria triumphed over rivals Cameroon with a 2-0 victory in thier Round of 16 clash between on Saturday at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations holding in Ivory Coast.
The match between the continental heavyweights had in the last few days frawn so much attention with both countries throwing banters at each other on social media platforms.
It was a match played in front of a vibrant crowd at the Felix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, where a good Nigerian Defence lead by William Ekong kept frustrating early efforts by the Cameroon.
In the 9th minute of the game, Nigeria seemed to have taken an early lead when Lookman's corner, turned in by Ajayi was ruled off by VAR as an offside.
The Super Eagles did not relent regardless as they caught a break in the 36th minute after Victor Osimhen capitalized on a defensive mistake to set up Lookman, who went past Onana for a finish that gave Nigeria their lead in the half.
The Eagles seemed to have wornout the ferocious Lions who were unable to deal with Nigeria's intensity as they conceded just before full time when Lookman slotting home another goal to make it 2-0 for the Nigerian side.
Victor Osimhen showed a superb form and pedigree in the game providing the creative moves in the attacking line and making his assist to the goals scored. With the result, Nigeria proceeds to the quarter-final and set up a clash with Angola,
Former Indomitable Lions Player and now Cameroon's Coach, Rigobert Song said the team gave the opponent the opportunity to put them in difficulty.
He stressed that the AFCON is a competition that is played on all levels: technical, tactical, and especially mental and having a youthful team means they still have a lot to learn.
Reacting immediately after the game, Nigeria's Coach José Peseiro said the focus is now on the next match against Angola, that has been having an excellent tournament so far.
