Nigeria's President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sounded a note of warning to agents of instability in the country saying "Enough is enough, it has to stop and it will stop", especially to those unwilling to come to their senses and embrace national unity and coherence.
The President was speaking at the News Agency of Nigeria's 1st Annual International Lecture with the Theme: Insecurity In The Sahel (2008-2024); Dissecting Nigeria's Challenges, Genesis, Impacts And Options" held at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Abuja.
The President who was represented by the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu emphasized that a secured Nigeria is a secure Sahel region because of its number, size and strategic position and changing Nigeria will also translate into the other parts of neighboring states who are facing challenges and difficulties of insecurity amongst other challenges.
He said the lecture, organized by the News Agency of Nigeria, is a worthy contribution to the ongoing debate on the nation's security architecture and what prognosis to make going forward as the theme: insecurity in the Sahel dissecting Nigeria's challenges, genesis, impacts and options could not have been more apt.
"The Sahel according to the Nigerian leader is a regional heritage and the nation is compelled to confront its issues. There is no doubt that the insecurity in the Sahel is often very much underestimated. It is in this complex with deep roots in sundry causal factors such as climate change, food insecurity and extremism which have created a ring of violence and instability in the region"
President Tinubu highlighted that in tackling the security challenges of the country, his administration has adopted a multifaceted approach as enshrined in the renewed hope agenda which prioritized security as a critical component of government focus.
"our key security objectives have included strengthening institutions and promoting accountability to address the root causes of insecurity as well as investing in job creation, infrastructure development, social services to reduce poverty and inequality and clean up.
We have developed both kinetic and non kinetic strategies in considerably eliminating the threats of buffalo haram, cowards, idiots, banditry, kidnapping for ransom and violent extremists"
"Enough is enough! For 15 years we've been going through hell in this country. Bad people are doing what they like. They continue to interfere with where we live our lives, interfere with our commerce, interfere with our education, interfere with our health system, interfere with our transportation and so on. And we just sit down and stand and allow them. Enough is enough. It has to stop. It will stop"
He sounded a note of warning to those who have taken arms against the state thus: " If you are ready to come and surrender and stop it, do, otherwise you know what is going to happen to you, whoever you are".
He appealed passionately to Nigerians to give the government time as the administration is committed to uplifting the downtrodden from the shackles of poverty with continuous investment in job creation, infrastructure development and social services.
ECOWAS/NIGERIA/MNJTF
The President said, as a chair of the regional bloc ECOWAS, "we are strengthening regional collaboration with neighboring countries to share intelligence, coordinate security efforts and address common challenges"
He applauded the Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa for what he did with the Niger MNJTF return promising that his government will continue to provide the armed forces with the needed human and material resources to achieve success.
"our security forces, represented here by our own lieutenant General Christopher Musa and all of you, we are here in the armed forces formation, this country will continue to be grateful, a very grateful country to our own armed forces and the skilled forces. We are beginning to restore order, get stability and to have a new Nigeria"
General Abdulsalam Peace Efforts in Africa
He praised and appreciated Elder Statesman, General Abdulsalam Abubakar whom he described as the nation's fountain of wisdom, intelligence, brilliance, with the ability to settle and bring footwater to fire whenever it rages in the country or continent.
"You have always been breath of fresh air. Wherever or whenever we are in trouble, you will be the one to come in, w saw it, we witness it, we will continue to be grateful for your service, may God continue to give you good health. Not long ago when we had issues, we called on him again and said, go to Niger, and today we are living in peace with our Niger brothers" dated the President.
