Ibrahim Babangida Admits MKO Abiola Won June 12 Election Cleanly, Apologises For Cancellation

Former Military Leader in Nigeria, who was addressed as Military President, retired General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida has admitted That Moshood Abiola won the June 12 Presidential Election in 1993 and apologised to Nigerians over the annulment of the same. 


The former leader expressed regrets on Thursday, 20th February, 2025 at Transcorp Holton, Abuja, during the official launch of his memoir, titled; "A Journey In service".


Retired General Babangida who stated that, that part of Nigeria's history is regrettable said, his government acted in the supreme national interest of the Nigerian nation. As a leader of the then military administration, General Babangida, assumed full responsibility for all decisions taken under his watch.


“undoubtedly credible, free and fair elections were held on June 12, 1993 however, The tragic irony of history remains that the administration that devised a near perfect electoral system and conducted those near perfect elections could not complete the process"


“That accident of history is most regrettable the nation is entitled to expect my impression of regret.”


General Babangida acknowledged that his administration’s actions disrupted the nation’s transition to civilian rule but emphasised that the country ultimately overcame the setback.


“We acted in the supreme national interest so that Nigeria could survive.Our nation’s march to democracy was interrupted, a fact that I deeply regret, but Nigeria survived, and democracy is still alive, a testament to our regime and commitment to progress"


“This book is part of my personal story of that encounter with national history. I did not travel alone. I undertook the challenging walk of leadership in the company of many patriots,” the former leader stated.


The launch of the memoirs, a high-profile event, brought together past and present leaders, statesmen, and key political figures who reflected on Babangida’s legacy and Nigeria’s democratic journey.


The book Chronicles the Service of General Babangida, who led Nigeria from 1985 to 1993, and played a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s economic and political landscape. It equally provides insights into critical decisions made during his tenure, the challenges of governance, and his vision for a stable and prosperous Nigeria.


*Keynote Speaker And Tributes From Former Leaders*

The keynote Speaker at the event, and former Ghanaian President, Nana Akufo-Addo, warning against the resurgence of military coups across the continent while underscoring the significance of democratic governance in Africa. 


He emphasized that Multi-party democracy remains the foundation for Africa’s progress, therfore Africa must continue to uphold democratic values and institutions. 

Nigeria's former Head of State, retired General Yakubu Gowon, praised Babangida’s leadership and strategic influence, while referring to him as a “boss of bosses.” He also expressed gratitude for Babangida’s decision to restore his military rank, which had been revoked following the 1976 coup.

Another former military leader of Nigeria, retired General Abdulsalami Abubakar, reflected on his long-standing relationship with Babangida, and described "A Journey in Service" as ‘a valuable historical document that offers deep insights into Nigeria’s governance.’


He said “This memoir is a rich addition to our national archives,".

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, lauded Babangida’s charismatic leadership and called for the establishment of presidential libraries to document Nigeria’s political history.


“IBB’s legacy and contributions deserve institutional preservation. Presidential libraries should be created to chronicle the journeys of our leaders,” Jonathan stated.

The representative of former President Muhammadu Buhari, former Minister of Transportation Jaji Sambo delivered a message, commending Babangida for his continued role as a statesman and mentor to Nigeria’s leadership.


The memoir, "A Journey in Service" captures the defining moments of Babangida’s leadership and the evolution of Nigeria’s governance.

As the nation continues to navigate its democratic path, his reflections provide valuable lessons on leadership, unity, and national progress.
