The operations reflect a sustained shift in counter-terrorism efforts from responding to attacks to proactively targeting terrorist enclaves, disrupting their mobility routes, and denying armed groups the ability to establish operational footholds within vulnerable communities.
According to a statement issued by the Media Information Officer, Joint Task Force (North West), Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, the successes were recorded through coordinated counter-terrorism and search-and-rescue operations conducted across the two states.
Offensive operations build on recent gains in Katsina
On 16 June 2026, troops conducting Operation CLEAN SWEEP 3 intensified attacks on terrorist positions in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State, following intelligence on terrorist activities around the area.
The operation also built on recent operational gains recorded with the rescue of the spouse of the late Major General Rabe Abubakar, as troops moved to further degrade terrorist networks and free captives held in their custody.
Troops targeted an identified terrorist hideout in Fafu Village, where the terrorists were overwhelmed by the aggressive assault and superior firepower, forcing them to abandon their camp and flee.
A clearance operation conducted afterwards led to the recovery of four kidnap victims, who were evacuated and are currently receiving medical attention for injuries sustained during captivity.
Troops disrupt planned abduction in Zamfara
In a related operation in Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State, troops foiled a planned abduction after terrorist elements infiltrated Zurmi town with the intention of attacking residents.
Responding to a distress call, troops swiftly mobilised to the area and engaged the terrorists in a firefight, forcing them to abandon their mission and withdraw.
A follow-on clearance and exploitation operation resulted in the rescue of three additional victims, who were safely recovered and reunited with their families.
The coordinated operations across Katsina and Zamfara demonstrate the continued operational approach of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, combining offensive action, intelligence-led targeting, and rapid response capabilities to weaken terrorist networks before they can expand their influence.
By maintaining pressure on hideouts, disrupting attack formations, and recovering abducted persons, the Joint Task Force is reinforcing a security strategy focused on denying criminal elements freedom of action and restoring stability across communities affected by terrorism and banditry in the North-West.
