The Nigerian Army is linking its ongoing force expansion directly to a strengthened pool of professionally trained combat personnel, with graduates of Exercise RESTORE HOPE X expected to form part of the manpower base for newly established divisions, formations and units.
Lieutenant General Shaibu described Exercise RESTORE HOPE X as the flagship of the Nigerian Army's post-basic infantry training framework, designed to strengthen combat proficiency, reinforce the warrior ethos and prepare soldiers for the increasingly complex demands of contemporary military operations.
The COAS disclosed that the ongoing restructuring of the Nigerian Army, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has resulted in the establishment of additional divisions, formations and units aimed at optimising force disposition and improving operational responsiveness.
A significant implication of the development is that the expansion of formations is being matched with personnel development. Many of the soldiers graduating from the programme are expected to constitute the nucleus of the new formations, placing greater emphasis on the ability of training institutions to produce personnel capable of immediately translating doctrine and skills into battlefield effectiveness.
The Army Chief consequently urged the graduands to justify the investment in their training through professionalism, sound judgement and unwavering commitment to mission accomplishment.
Professionalism As A Force Multiplier
Beyond tactical competence, the COAS placed particular emphasis on the standards expected of personnel operating within the expanding force structure.
He directed the graduands to remain physically fit, mentally agile and technologically proficient while continuously adapting to emerging threats and embracing innovation. He also stressed strict adherence to discipline, the rule of law, protection of human rights and applicable rules of engagement.
The emphasis signals that the Army's expansion is not being framed solely around increasing manpower. It is also intended to produce a force capable of operating within a modern security environment where tactical effectiveness, professional conduct, technological awareness and lawful application of military force increasingly determine operational credibility.
Lieutenant General Shaibu further stressed that realistic and mission-oriented training would remain fundamental to building a highly skilled fighting force capable of achieving decisive operational outcomes across Nigeria's various theatres.
RESTORE HOPE X Strengthens Post-Basic Combat Training
The Chief of Training (Army), Major General Valentine Okoro, described Exercise RESTORE HOPE X as a critical component of the Nigerian Army's training architecture.
According to him, the programme has continued to produce motivated and combat-ready soldiers who have distinguished themselves across different operational theatres.
The training exposed participants to realistic operational scenarios covering tactical operations, marksmanship, field craft, combat endurance, leadership development and counter-insurgency operations.
The programme also focused on strengthening confidence, decision-making and battlefield competence, capabilities that become particularly important as trained personnel are absorbed into formations operating against diverse security threats.
Major General Okoro added that the exercise was contributing to institutional capacity by standardising post-basic infantry training, improving instructional methodologies and encouraging continuous improvement across Army training establishments.
Force Expansion And Operational Responsiveness
The deployment of trained personnel into the Army's expanding structure is expected to support the broader objective of improving operational responsiveness.
The new force architecture is intended to optimise the distribution of military capability while positioning personnel and formations closer to emerging security challenges. For the Army, however, the effectiveness of that structure will ultimately depend on whether expanded formations are supported by adequately trained personnel, equipment, leadership and sustainable operational resources.
The graduation of RESTORE HOPE X therefore represents both a training milestone and part of the manpower development required to operationalise the Army's wider restructuring programme.
The COAS acknowledged President Tinubu's continued support for the Army's operational, training and administrative requirements, describing sustained federal investment as instrumental to the Service's ongoing transformation and force expansion.
For the graduating soldiers, the immediate challenge is to convert the skills acquired at Kachia into disciplined and effective operational performance as they assume responsibilities within an Army undergoing significant structural and capability changes.
