President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the most significant salary adjustment for members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria in recent years, authorising increases of between 30 and 80 per cent in a sweeping welfare package expected to benefit about 250,000 military personnel. The decision signals a major policy shift towards strengthening troop welfare as a strategic pillar of Nigeria's national security architecture.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, announced that the new salary structure will take effect from 1 September 2026, with increases varying across ranks. Officers from the rank of Brigadier General to General will receive a 30 per cent increase, personnel from Colonel to Warrant Officer will earn 50 per cent more, while soldiers from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive the highest adjustment of 80 per cent.
The new remuneration package raises the Federal Government's annual military wage bill from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, reflecting a substantial increase in defence personnel expenditure. The approval comes as the Armed Forces continue sustained operations against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats across multiple theatres.
President Tinubu said the welfare package recognises the sacrifices made daily by members of the Armed Forces in protecting Nigeria's sovereignty and safeguarding citizens. He reaffirmed that troop welfare would remain a priority of his administration alongside continued investment in modern weapons systems, military technology and operational capabilities required to confront evolving security challenges.
The President maintained that national development cannot be achieved without security, pledging sustained mobilisation of military and law enforcement assets to eliminate threats to lives, property and national stability. He urged military personnel to regard the salary adjustment as a demonstration of the nation's appreciation for their service and dedication to defending the country.
