The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has commissioned a solar-powered, fully equipped 30-seater computer laboratory with high-speed internet access at Agunbiade Victory High School, Magbon, Abeokuta, Ogun State, as part of the COAS Special Intervention Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) Project.

Represented at the commissioning by the General Officer Commanding 81 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Adebayo Abdulrahman Babalola, the COAS described the intervention as timely and consequential, saying it would expand access to digital learning resources for students of the school and beneficiaries in Magbon and adjoining communities.
In a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations, 81 Division Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Colonel Iweha Ikedichi, Lieutenant General Shaibu said the facility would provide a functional environment for teaching, learning, research and innovation while strengthening computer literacy and digital skills among beneficiaries.
The COAS said the value of the intervention should extend beyond the physical transformation of the school by promoting knowledge sharing, creating opportunities and contributing to a more informed, productive and technologically empowered community.
He urged the people of Magbon, school management and other beneficiaries to take collective ownership of the facility and ensure its protection, proper use and preservation. He also called for suitable arrangements for routine maintenance, security and continued functionality of the laboratory.
Speaking earlier, the project benefactor, Major General Ismail Dapo Oloyede, expressed gratitude to God and the Chief of Army Staff for bringing to reality his longstanding desire to give back to his alma mater.
Oloyede described the school as an institution where he received the guidance and discipline that contributed significantly to his development, expressing hope that the new facility would provide a platform for learning, innovation, creativity and development.
The Chief of Civil-Military Affairs (Army), Major General Mohammed Etsu IndagI, described the intervention as part of the Nigerian Army’s efforts to strengthen its connection with communities.
He explained that the COAS CIMIC Special Intervention Project was established to honour senior military officers, usually of the rank of Major General, through development interventions in communities associated with their service and background.
Indagi said projects under the scheme include interventions in healthcare, potable water supply, school construction and renovation, as well as roads and bridges, depending on identified community needs.
The newly commissioned facility comprises 30 computer systems, solar power infrastructure and high-speed internet access, providing students with opportunities to develop computer skills, access digital educational resources, conduct research and build technological confidence.
The solar-powered system is also expected to provide a dependable electricity supply while supporting the adoption of renewable energy.
In a goodwill message, the Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Professor Abayomi Arigbabu, expressed appreciation for the contribution of corporate organisations, individuals and old students towards revitalising education in the state.
He described the provision of the computers, solar power and internet facilities as a deliberate intervention to ensure that students at the school remain connected to emerging educational and technological opportunities.
The ceremony was attended by serving and retired senior military officers, officials of the Ogun State Ministry of Education, traditional rulers, members of the Old Students Association, as well as staff and students of the school. Activities included goodwill messages, cultural displays by students, commissioning and unveiling of a commemorative plaque, and group photographs.
