Ceremony in Abuja on October 12, 2026.

developments.

Minister Calls For Intelligence-Led Security Operations
Alhaji
Idris Mohammed who was represented at the event by the Director-General
and Chief Executive Officer of Voice of Nigeria, Mallam Jibrin Baba
Ndacecommended DECAN for selecting a theme that reflects the complexity of
Nigeria’s security challenges. He noted that military operations remain
necessary but must be supported by reliable intelligence, modern technology,
effective coordination among security agencies and cooperation with
communities.
The
Minister also stressed the need to address the conditions that allow criminal
groups to recruit, operate and threaten the lives and livelihoods of innocent
Nigerians.
Linking
the security agenda to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,
Alhaji Idris Mohammed highlighted the Federal Government’s efforts to modernise
the Armed Forces, improve surveillance, strengthen intelligence-led operations
and enhance coordination among security and intelligence agencies.
He
disclosed that the President directed the preparation of a comprehensive
National Threat Assessment and a rolling five-year Strategic Defence Operations
Plan in August 2026. The initiatives are intended to improve coordination,
establish clear priorities and guide the deployment of resources against
evolving threats.
The
Minister also cited the President’s approval of salary increases ranging from
30 to 80 per cent for Armed Forces personnel, effective September 2026, as part
of the administration’s commitment to the welfare of security personnel.
He
emphasised that these measures must translate into tangible improvements for
Nigerians, including safer communities and roads, greater protection for
farmers and businesses, and the ability of children to attend school without
fear.
Minister
Emphasises Responsible Reporting And Public Accountability
Alhaji
Idris Mohammed described the media as an important partner in national security
communication, noting that accurate reporting helps citizens understand
security developments, while proper verification can prevent rumours and
fabricated reports from creating panic or undermining operations.
He
maintained, however, that responsible reporting must not become a reason to
shield government or security agencies from scrutiny. Journalists, he said,
should continue asking difficult questions and holding institutions accountable
while respecting legitimate operational sensitivities.
The
Minister reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to providing timely and credible
information and strengthening cooperation between government, the media and the
public. He urged conference participants to develop practical ideas that would
improve public understanding, strengthen intelligence-led operations and
support a more secure Nigeria.
Mallam
Ndace Highlights Experience In Defence Journalism
In
a separate goodwill message, the Director-General of Voice of Nigeria, Mallam
Jibrin Baba Ndace, described defence journalism as an important pillar of
national security communication, noting that correspondents help the public
understand military operations, the sacrifices of troops and the challenges
involved in securing the country.
Mallam
Ndace drew on his own experience as a defence correspondent and embedded
journalist during the counter-insurgency campaign under former Chief of Army
Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai. He explained that his
experiences in the North-East inspired his trilogy on counter-insurgency, which
was subsequently used in recognising General Buratai’s contributions to the
campaign.
He
also recalled his involvement in Nigerian Navy Today, a special
intervention documentary project that showcased the operational efforts and
contributions of the Nigerian Navy under former Chief of the Naval Staff,
Admiral A.Z. Gambo.
According
to Mallam Ndace, the project demonstrated the importance of documenting the
work of military institutions and communicating their contributions to national
security.
Voice
Of Nigeria DG Calls For Professional Reporting And Collaboration
Mallam
Ndace urged defence correspondents to maintain accurate, balanced and
responsible reporting that supports national security without compromising
professional ethics or operational security.
He
encouraged participants to use the conference to exchange experiences and build
lasting professional relationships with military authorities, security experts
and fellow journalists. Stronger collaboration, he noted, could improve the
quality of defence reporting and deepen public trust.
He
congratulated the DECAN chairman, president and executive committee for
organising the conference and awards ceremony, and commended the award
recipients for their contributions to defence journalism and national
development.
The two addresses highlighted complementary responsibilities: government must communicate security developments credibly and pursue coordinated responses to evolving threats, while defence journalists must report accurately, scrutinise institutions and maintain professional standards.
