🇳🇬 MPB, Military Veterans Seek Clarity on Pension Adjustments as Disputes Over Payments Persist

The Military Pensions Board (MPB) and military veterans have agreed on the need for transparent engagement and clearer explanations of pension computations following complaints over the recent consequential adjustment, although disputed payment calculations remained unresolved after an interactive meeting in Abuja.

The Chairman of the MPB, Air Vice Marshal Mikail Abdulraheem, gave the assurance during the session on Tuesday, explaining the legal framework and approved salary structure used to calculate retirees’ pension entitlements.

Abdulraheem said the board administered pensions in line with applicable laws and salary structures issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission. He explained that the commission provided a revised salary structure for pension and gratuity purposes following the salary review for serving military personnel, effective 1 September 2026.

According to the chairman, the revised structure incorporates the approved adjustments and provides the basis for calculating pension entitlements according to rank and years of service. He stressed that the board did not independently determine salary rates but applied the approved structure in accordance with the relevant pension regulations.

Abdulraheem explained that pension calculations followed a graduated formula based on years of service, with entitlements rising from the prescribed minimum to a maximum of 90 per cent of the applicable final emolument after 35 years of service.

He said applying a common framework was necessary to maintain consistency between existing pensioners and personnel who would retire in the future. The chairman urged veterans to submit their individual calculations and supporting pension records so the board could examine differences between expected entitlements and amounts received.

“We want everyone to see the applicable documents and understand the computation rather than rely on assumptions,” he said.

Abdulraheem added that the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission had been invited to clarify the revised salary structure and the basis for the figures used in the computations. He maintained that examining individual pension records against the applicable regulations would provide a clearer basis for resolving complaints.

The chairman also encouraged veterans’ organisations to adopt a coordinated approach when engaging the board, noting that a recognised channel would facilitate communication and help prevent complaints from becoming fragmented across different groups.

Representatives of the veterans called for greater transparency in implementing the consequential adjustment, alleging that some retirees received increases below the percentages announced for their respective rank categories.

They also raised concerns about differences in arrears paid to warrant officers and master warrant officers, alongside questions about pension benefits for medically boarded personnel.

Retired Master Warrant Officer Duru Augustine, one of the veterans’ representatives, said pensioners wanted to understand how the revised salary structure translated into the actual amounts credited to individual retirees. He called for their concerns to be examined under the applicable pension framework, with clear explanations of the calculations.

In response, Abdulraheem reiterated the board’s readiness to review complaints against the relevant records and regulations. He said accurate information and consistent application of the rules were essential to addressing discrepancies and misunderstandings.

The meeting allowed the MPB to explain its position and veterans to present their grievances, but the disputed calculations were not fully reconciled. Clarification of the revised salary structure and examination of individual pension records therefore remain central to resolving the concerns raised.
