The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, reaffirmed this commitment on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, while receiving the Chief of Defence Staff of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Amara Idara Bangura, at Army Headquarters, Abuja.
From Shared Sacrifice to Collective Security
Lieutenant General Shaibu highlighted Nigeria’s contributions to peace enforcement and peace support operations in Liberia and Sierra Leone under the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG), noting that Nigerian troops made significant sacrifices in restoring stability during periods of conflict.
He emphasised that Nigeria’s military experience and strategic position carry a continuing responsibility to support regional peace through counterterrorism operations, military capacity building and multinational cooperation.
The engagement places renewed emphasis on converting the countries’ shared history into practical defence partnerships capable of addressing present-day security threats. For West Africa, the challenge extends beyond the legacy of past interventions to sustaining cooperation against threats that cross national borders.
Intelligence Sharing and Regional Military Integration
Lieutenant General Shaibu called for stronger defence partnerships among ECOWAS member states, particularly English-speaking countries, through improved intelligence sharing, joint training and operational coordination.
He also expressed concern over the withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger from ECOWAS and the emergence of the Alliance of Sahel States, stressing the need for sustained diplomatic engagement and strategic cooperation to preserve regional cohesion and counter terrorism and violent extremism.
The position underscores the importance of maintaining channels for military cooperation even as regional political arrangements evolve. Intelligence exchange, coordinated training and sustained dialogue remain central to collective responses to security threats affecting neighbouring states.
Sierra Leone Reaffirms Its Defence Partnership with Nigeria
Lieutenant General Bangura acknowledged Nigeria’s decisive intervention in restoring peace to Sierra Leone during its civil war and expressed appreciation for the sacrifices of Nigerian troops.
Drawing on his own military training in Nigeria, he described the relationship between both countries as a strategic partnership built on shared history, mutual trust and a common commitment to regional peace.
He reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s solidarity with Nigeria in addressing contemporary security challenges and pledged to sustain military cooperation among Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Liberia. He also highlighted initiatives to honour veterans of regional peace support operations.
Lieutenant General Shaibu congratulated Bangura on the successful completion of his tenure as Chairman of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff, commending his contributions to regional military cooperation. The Army Chief reiterated the Nigerian Army’s determination to consolidate bilateral defence relations and support collective security initiatives, while recognising the contributions of military personnel and veterans to West Africa’s peace and stability.
Sustaining the Legacy of Regional Peace Operations
The engagement highlights the continuing relevance of Nigeria’s past peace support operations to current regional security priorities. Their legacy is not limited to the restoration of stability during earlier conflicts; it also provides a foundation for military relationships that can support intelligence cooperation, capacity building and coordinated responses to emerging threats.
For Nigeria and Sierra Leone, sustaining that partnership will depend on translating shared history and diplomatic goodwill into continued practical cooperation. At the regional level, stronger military ties and sustained engagement among West African states remain important to preserving security cooperation amid changing political and strategic circumstances.
