The Former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai has identified culture and tradition as viable tools in promoting national security and unity while emphasizing that none of the country's cultures recognises banditry or terrorism.
The Former Ambassador of Nigeria to Benin Republic was speaking at the Army Headquarters Garrison's West African Social Activities (WASA) 2023 held on Saturday 17th February at the Mogadishu Cantonment, Asokoro Abuja.
WASA is an annual event aimed at sustaining unity in the barracks, promoting cultural awareness and sensitivity and an avenue for personnel and their families to interact in a relaxed atmosphere.
General Buratai who was the Special Guest of Honour at the event pointed out that there is no place that the cultural diversity of Nigeria is more represented like the Nigerian military.
He said as the Nigerian Army tackles the security situation in the country both the kenetic and the none kenetic, culture and tradition play a great role in bridging the gap of understanding between the people and the military.
The Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja in his address said WASA event has sustained unity in diversity, foster education and acceptability accross Barracks and Cantonments of the Nigerian Army.
According to the COAS, culture defines way of life and the awareness of cultural sensitivity and uniqueness helps the troops in the planning and execution of operations accross the country.
General Lagbaja emphasized that WASA makes cultural intergration possible and foster harmonious living in units and formations, it also strenggtens social cohesion amongs personnel and their families.
While admitting that the myriad of security challenges facing the country are constantly mutating, he stressed that the Nigerian Army and sisters services, as well as other security agencies have worked asidiously to ensure threats to national security are contained in the mids of daunting challenges.
He therefore challenged officers and men of the Nigerian Army to be deligent and focused in containing the security challenges to allow for meaningful development in the country.
The Commander Army Headquarters Garrison, Major General Koko Isoni said WASA is part of appreciation of personnel performances in the outgone year as the Garrison performed well in the year 2023.
The event featured various cultural dances and displays from different parts of Nigeria as well as interagencies Tug-of-war, Suya competition, and the lighting of the burn fire.
