The United States Department of Defence West Africa Coordination Element Lead, led by Major General Kenneth Ekman met with Nigeria's Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle in Ship House, Abuja.
The meeting revolved around enhancing Nigeria's Bilateral Relations with the United States of America in area of Intelligence Sharing in the fight against insecurity.
It would be recalled that the two countries have had more than 50 years of security partnership and friendship with Nigeria being among the most important in sub-Saharan Africa.
This is given Nigeria’s status as Africa’s most populous country, largest economy as well as shared democratic values with the United States through regional and multilateral fora like the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), the Global Coalition to Defeat Daesh/ISIS, and the African Union.
The cooperation focuss on increasing cooperation on maritime and border security, military professionalization, counterterrorism efforts against Boko Haram and ISIS-West Africa, defense trade, and strengthening governance of the security sector.
