Scotland – July 28, 2025 — U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Israel to ensure humanitarian aid reaches civilians in Gaza, marking a shift in tone as harrowing images of starving children trigger global outrage.
Speaking in Scotland alongside U.K. Prime Minister
Keir Starmer, Trump acknowledged the worsening situation in Gaza, stating, “I
want to make sure they get the food.” He added that Israel’s Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu “has got to sort of like run it” and ensure aid is
delivered.
Trump also announced the U.S. will
begin setting up food distribution centers in Gaza, though no details were
immediately provided by the White House. The announcement comes amid mounting
criticism over Gaza’s starvation crisis, with international bodies and rights
groups describing the conditions as dire.
While Trump stopped short of directly
challenging Netanyahu’s claim that “there is no starvation in Gaza,” he noted,
“Based on television, I would say not particularly because those children look
very hungry.”
The remarks reflect a departure from
Trump’s recent comments, where he expressed resignation over stalled ceasefire
talks and said Israel would “have to clean it up.” Now, he says humanitarian
action must take priority: “We have to get the kids fed.”
The Israeli military has recently
begun airdrops and limited ceasefires to allow for aid distribution, but many
say it's far from enough. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi publicly
urged Trump to use his influence to halt the war and ensure aid delivery.
Starmer, meanwhile, called the
situation “desperate” and urged greater humanitarian effort. He reiterated the
U.K.’s support for a two-state solution, while Trump declined to comment on
Palestinian statehood.
The developments come as the U.N. General Assembly holds a high-level session to discuss peace efforts — a meeting boycotted by both Israel and the U.S.
