Army launches 3-day seminar to prepare officers for post-service life amid
financial and mental health concerns.
The Chief of
Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede has advised personnel of
the Nigerian Army nearing retirement to adopt moderate lifestyles and avoid
financial recklessness in their post-service lives.
He gave this
advice at the Third Quarter 2025 Veterans Affairs Pre-Retirement Training
and Business Development Seminar, which began on Monday, August 4, at the Nigerian
Army School of Finance and Administration in Apapa, Lagos State.
The COAS,
represented by Corps Commander of Engineering, Major General Tonye Numbere,
cautioned against the allure of extravagant living and poorly planned
investments after retirement, warning that such decisions often lead to
hardship.
“Post-service
life comes with peculiar challenges—limited financial resources, mismanagement
of retirement benefits, and the absence of military structure,” COAS Oluyede
said. “It is, therefore, unwise to adopt an extravagant lifestyle or venture
into unfamiliar businesses without proper guidance.”
He explained
that the 3-day seminar, themed “Building Resilience of Personnel/Veterans
for Thriving in Post-Retirement Life,” was designed to equip retiring
soldiers with entrepreneurial skills, vocational options, and wellness
strategies needed to thrive in civilian life.
The seminar,
which runs from August 3 to 5, features training in financial planning,
business development, and physical and mental wellness support, reflecting the
Army’s commitment to the welfare of its veterans.
According to
Lt.-Gen. Oluyede, the initiative is crucial in today’s economic climate and
aims to help officers transition smoothly from military service to civilian
stability.
