The Federal Government, through the
EFCC, has filed an 11-ground notice of appeal to overturn the July 24 judgment
of Justice Olayinka Faji, which cleared Olufemi Thomas of five out of six
counts of money laundering.
While Thomas was fined ₦10 million for a cash
transaction above the legal limit, the judge ruled that the EFCC failed to
prove unlawful enrichment. The court also ordered the return of the seized
funds within 14 days.
Dissatisfied, EFCC argued that the
lower court ignored contradictions in Thomas’s income claims and failed to
forfeit the $2.1 million linked to unexplained wealth.
The appeal urges the Court of Appeal
to reverse the acquittal and approve the forfeiture of the funds to the
Nigerian government.
