The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, presided over the graduation on Friday, October 9, 2026, according to a statement by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele.

The development is intended to provide field formations with additional specialised personnel capable of operating in difficult terrain, conducting complex missions and targeting terrorist and criminal networks.

The expansion of the Army’s divisions has increased the importance of matching force structure with the specialist capabilities needed to support operational readiness across different security theatres. While additional formations extend the Army’s organisational reach, their effectiveness also depends on personnel trained to respond to threats that demand skills beyond conventional infantry operations.

Lieutenant General Shaibu noted that the Army’s expansion from eight to 12 divisions requires corresponding specialised capabilities. He identified emerging threats, including the use of drones and improvised explosive devices, as part of the changing operational environment in which the new battalion will be expected to serve.

The graduands completed six months of intensive training designed to improve combat proficiency, resilience and adaptability. Their preparation included demanding physical and tactical exercises at a school whose facilities feature a 20-obstacle course described as the Army’s most difficult and complex to date, alongside its first-ever maze designed to help soldiers overcome fear of darkness and confined spaces while improving spatial orientation.

The training reflects the demands placed on specialised troops operating in environments where terrain, restricted visibility and evolving adversary tactics can complicate missions. However, the value of the battalion will ultimately depend on how effectively its training translates into coordinated operations, sound decisions and measurable improvements in the security environment.

Lieutenant General Shaibu charged the personnel to uphold discipline, precision and sound judgment while respecting human rights. He stressed that tactical success must not undermine public confidence, placing professional conduct alongside operational effectiveness as a requirement for sustainable security outcomes.

The Army Chief also emphasised intelligence-led operations, technological awareness and cooperation with sister Services and other security agencies. These priorities point to the need for specialised troops to work within a wider operational framework in which intelligence, coordination and an understanding of emerging technologies are as important as individual combat proficiency.

Earlier, the Chief of Training (Army), Major General Valentine Okoro, explained that the course had been tailored to contemporary operational demands and lessons from ongoing operations. The Commandant of the Nigerian Army Special Forces School, Brigadier General Umar Abubakar, highlighted the rigorous physical and tactical preparation undertaken by the graduands.

Lieutenant General Shaibu commended the instructors and training partners for their contributions to developing a highly trained, adaptable and mission-ready force.

The graduation adds a specialised component to the Nigerian Army’s expanding force structure. Its longer-term significance will be measured by the battalion’s ability to support field formations, adapt to changing threats and conduct effective operations while maintaining the professional standards required to sustain public trust.
