According to
a statement by the Director, Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Zaki
Kuka, the operation was launched after credible intelligence revealed a large
bandit camp in the forests near Babana, close to the Nigeria–Benin Republic
border.
The Army Spokesman confirmed: “Troops engaged the bandits in a decisive firefight, neutralising several while others fled with gunshot wounds. Weapons, ammunition, and motorcycles used for mobility were recovered from the hideout.”
He added
that the operation was part of intensified clearance missions targeting cross-border
bandit networks that have been terrorising rural communities in Niger, Kwara,
and adjoining states.
Troops have since dominated the area, conducting follow-up patrols to prevent regrouping of criminal elements. Locals were urged to remain vigilant and provide timely information to security forces.
Fact-Check & Background Context:
Babana, located in Borgu LGA of Niger State, borders Benin Republic and has been a corridor for arms trafficking and bandit movement.
The Nigerian Army’s clearance operations there align with broader regional security cooperation efforts to cut off cross-border crime routes.
