The company
announced that the UK facility will be the first in a network of Centres of
Excellence across Europe and the United States. These hubs will focus on
producing resilient inertial navigation systems (INS) for environments
where the Global Positioning System (GPS) cannot be trusted.
A statement by Advanced Navigation’s Chief Operating Officer, Grace Hynd, said the expansion responds to “escalating electronic warfare threats, GNSS interference, and the critical need for resilient autonomy on the battlefield.”
“The UK Centre of Excellence is the blueprint for our
international rollout. Each centre will allow us to collaborate directly with
regional defence and technology leaders, ensuring onshore supply chains that
meet allied security standards,” Hynd said.
The
announcement comes as Europe reports a 220% surge in GPS interference over the
past three years, with the European Union classifying PNT infrastructure as
critical to safety, defence, and economic stability. Last week, GPS jamming
forced the European Commission President’s flight to divert.
The UK site
selection is underway, with emphasis on skilled talent pools, logistics, and
aerospace proximity. The centre will also drive NATO-aligned resilience,
ensuring land, air, and sea platforms maintain navigation integrity under
hostile conditions.
Fact-Check
& Background Context
- Fact-check: The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) have confirmed a 220% rise in GNSS interference incidents since 2022.
- Background: Advanced Navigation, headquartered in Sydney, Australia, specializes in assured PNT and autonomous system technologies. Its recent Boreas 50 series fibre-optic gyroscope INS integrates electronic protection for high-threat environments.
