According to a statement by the Director of Defence
Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Päijät-Häme District Court in
Finland sentenced Ekpa to six years in prison after finding him guilty of
inciting violence and funding terrorism.
“This judgment
sends a strong message that there is no safe haven for individuals or groups
who sponsor or encourage acts of terror against Nigeria or any other sovereign
state,” General
Musa said. He commended Finnish authorities for their diligence in securing the
conviction.
The CDS also praised the coordinated
work of Nigerian security agencies, intelligence units, law enforcement, and
diplomats who provided actionable evidence that helped seal Ekpa’s fate. “The success reflects the power of international
cooperation and collaboration in tackling transnational threats,” he
added.
General Musa reaffirmed that the Armed
Forces will intensify collaboration with global partners to dismantle terrorist
networks and restore lasting peace in Nigeria. He urged citizens to stay
vigilant and back security agencies in countering insurgency and separatist
violence.

& Background Context
Simon Ekpa, a Finland-based lawyer
and separatist activist linked to IPOB, has long been accused of inciting
violence in Nigeria’s South-East through online broadcasts.
Nigerian authorities held him
responsible for enforcing “sit-at-home” orders that crippled businesses and
left dozens dead in attacks across the region.
His conviction in Finland aligns with the Tinubu administration’s broader security drive, which has emphasized international collaboration and zero tolerance for violent extremism.
