This message was underscored as senior defence leaders gathered to honour serving personnel, veterans and families of fallen troops, signalling that remembrance remains central to military tradition and national consciousness.

According to a statement signed by the Director Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the commemoration featured a Golf Kitty held at the Tukur Yusuf Buratai International Golf Resort and Country Club, Yar’Adua Barracks, Abuja, as part of the week-long activities.

Speaking at the event, the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), described Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day as a solemn national obligation to recognise serving personnel, wounded-in-action troops, veterans and those who paid the supreme price in defence of Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“This commemoration reminds the nation of the courage, sacrifice and professionalism of officers and men who continue to safeguard our peace, unity and security,” the Minister said.

He noted that sporting engagements during the remembrance week align with military values of physical fitness, mental resilience and operational readiness, while also strengthening bonds and esprit de corps within the Armed Forces community.

General Musa also appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for his continued support to the welfare and operational effectiveness of the military, and commended the Chief of Defence Staff for his leadership and service.

In his remarks, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, paid tribute to officers and men of the Armed Forces for their dedication and sacrifice, noting that the remembrance period provides a national moment of reflection on the selflessness of Nigeria’s military, past and present.

“Security is a collective responsibility, and national unity remains critical to sustaining peace and stability across the country,” the CDS said, while thanking Nigerians for their support of the Armed Forces.

Also speaking, the Captain of the TYB International Golf Resort and Country Club, Brigadier General Nicholas Ashinze, said hosting the event was an honour, disclosing that over 100 golfers participated in the tournament in tribute to Nigeria’s fallen and serving heroes.

The event featured award presentations, prizes, souvenir exchanges and group photographs, marking another symbolic moment in the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day programme.
