The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the Nigerian Navy with modern capabilities required to secure Nigeria’s maritime domain and unlock the potential of the blue economy.

The Minister made the
commitment during the Nigerian Navy’s 70th Anniversary Ceremonial Sunset Dinner
and Awards Night in Lagos, marking the conclusion of activities commemorating
seven decades of naval service.
Navy’s Future Tied
To Technology-Driven Capability
General Musa said the evolving
maritime security environment requires a Navy built around advanced
surveillance systems, intelligence capabilities, unmanned technologies, cyber
defence tools and data-driven operations.
The Defence Ministry noted
that technology integration and stronger partnerships with regional and
international actors remain essential for improving maritime domain awareness
and operational effectiveness in the Gulf of Guinea.
Protecting
Maritime Assets, Supporting Economic Growth
The Minister highlighted the
Nigerian Navy’s role in protecting sea lanes, offshore oil and gas
infrastructure and other critical maritime assets that support national
economic activity.
He further recognised the
Service’s contribution to combating piracy, crude oil theft, illegal fishing
and other maritime crimes affecting Nigeria’s coastal security and economic
interests.
Seven Decades Of
Service And Sacrifice
General Musa commended the
Chief of the Naval Staff, officers, ratings and civilian personnel for their
professionalism, discipline and resilience throughout the Navy’s 70-year
history.
He also honoured personnel
recognised during the ceremony, including those acknowledged posthumously,
describing their sacrifices as part of the traditions sustaining the Service.
Strategic Signal
The 70th anniversary
celebration reinforces the strategic role of maritime security in Nigeria’s
national development agenda, placing naval capability at the centre of
territorial protection, economic resilience and regional stability.
