The Armed Forces of Nigeria have reinforced their growing reliance on sports as a strategic non-kinetic instrument for youth development, national unity and long-term national security, with the Defence Headquarters signalling sustained investment in programmes designed to nurture future champions while promoting social cohesion.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the maiden Chief of Defence Staff Under-19 Open Badminton Championship and Super Series in Abuja, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, represented by the Chief of Defence Training, Rear Admiral Abolade Ogunleye, said the championship reflects the Armed Forces' broader commitment to developing responsible, disciplined and resilient young Nigerians through sporting excellence.
He explained that while military operations remain central to national security, sports provide an equally important non-kinetic pathway for building peace, strengthening unity and shaping responsible citizenship.
General Oluyede commended the Mambilla Barracks Badminton Club for partnering with the Defence Headquarters to stage the championship, noting that the collaboration demonstrates a shared commitment to talent development and nation-building. He observed that sports instil discipline, teamwork, respect for rules and healthy competition—qualities that contribute directly to national development and social stability.
The Defence Chief explained that the Under-19 category was deliberately created to identify and groom the next generation of Nigerian badminton players capable of competing successfully at continental and international levels.
He added that the inclusion of the Super Series recognised veteran players whose mentorship, dedication and years of service have sustained the development of badminton in Nigeria while inspiring younger athletes.
Reflecting on the tournament, General Oluyede expressed satisfaction that the competition achieved its objectives, noting that the finals showcased exceptional talent, tactical awareness, resilience and sportsmanship. He also praised the organising committee for successfully hosting a national championship that attracted participants from 19 states, describing the broad participation as evidence of the sport's growing reach across the country.
He reaffirmed the Defence Headquarters' commitment to supporting sporting initiatives that empower young people, strengthen national cohesion and contribute to peace and security. The Defence Chief also appreciated athletes, coaches, officials, parents, sponsors and supporters for their contributions to the successful championship, expressing confidence that many of the participants would eventually represent Nigeria with distinction on the global stage.
General Oluyede congratulated the winners while encouraging other participants to remain committed to their sporting aspirations, reminding them that every accomplished athlete begins as a learner. He also commended the wider badminton community for its continued role in identifying, nurturing and developing young sporting talents capable of projecting Nigeria positively.
