The successful defence of Forward Operating Base Mairari in Guzamala Local Government Area followed a late-night assault by ISWAP terrorists on 1 July, according to Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni.
The terrorists launched the attack at about 2325 hours, but troops of CIB XIX responded with sustained firepower, forcing the attackers to retreat after inflicting heavy casualties and destroying their equipment.
The Theatre Command disclosed that troops recovered AK-47 rifles, loaded magazines, Rocket Propelled Grenade tubes and other combat items abandoned during the encounter. Surveillance footage also confirmed the evacuation of several dead and wounded terrorists from the battlefield.
Military authorities noted that Mairari had only recently been resettled, with more than 950 households returning to the community. The attack, according to the command, was intended to intimidate residents and disrupt the resettlement process, but failed as no civilian casualties were recorded.
In a related operation, a reinforcement team advancing from Monguno detected and safely detonated two Improvised Explosive Devices planted along the route before engaging the fleeing terrorists, further disrupting their withdrawal and inflicting additional losses.
The operation, however, came at a cost. Two soldiers and one member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) were killed during the fierce engagement, while some military equipment sustained damage from Rocket Propelled Grenade fire. The Theatre Command paid tribute to the fallen personnel and extended condolences to their families.
Operation HADIN KAI said the outcome demonstrates the operational readiness, resilience and combat effectiveness of troops, stressing that the base remains firmly under military control as offensive operations continue across the theatre.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining pressure on terrorist groups until lasting peace, security and stability are restored across the North East.
