The Nigerian Army is expanding its personnel welfare infrastructure as part of efforts to improve living conditions, strengthen troop morale and sustain operational effectiveness across its formations.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, commissioned newly completed blocks of flats for officers at Ribadu Cantonment, Kaduna, on Tuesday, reinforcing the Army’s continuing investment in accommodation for personnel and their families.
The development was contained in a statement signed by the Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, who said the project was initiated and constructed under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, during his tenure as Chief of Army Staff.
The project forms part of efforts to address accommodation needs within the Nigerian Army and improve the welfare conditions of personnel, with the latest intervention adding to ongoing infrastructure development at Ribadu Cantonment.
Speaking at the commissioning, Lieutenant General Shaibu commended General Oluyede for his foresight and commitment to providing quality infrastructure for Army personnel.
The COAS described decent accommodation as an essential component of personnel welfare, linking conducive living conditions with the ability of officers and soldiers to discharge their constitutional responsibilities with professionalism, dedication and renewed commitment.
He said Army Headquarters would continue to pursue infrastructure development across formations and units to progressively reduce the accommodation deficit and improve the quality of life of personnel and their families.
The welfare intervention extends beyond the newly completed officers’ quarters. Following the commissioning, Lieutenant General Shaibu inspected ongoing construction of additional accommodation for soldiers within the cantonment.
He expressed satisfaction with the progress and standard of the work and directed the engineers and contractors handling the projects to maintain quality standards and comply with approved timelines.
The COAS further positioned personnel welfare, infrastructure development and training as critical enablers of operational effectiveness and institutional resilience, indicating that accommodation remains part of the wider conditions required to sustain an effective fighting force.
The Army’s continued infrastructure investment also places greater emphasis on the welfare of military families, recognising that improved living conditions can contribute to personnel morale and a more stable environment for service delivery.
Lieutenant General Shaibu urged beneficiaries of the newly commissioned facilities to take ownership of the accommodation by maintaining the structures properly, while upholding discipline, professionalism and commitment to duty.
The Kaduna projects therefore represent both a welfare intervention and an institutional investment, with the Army seeking to address infrastructure gaps while strengthening the conditions that support personnel readiness and long-term service effectiveness.
