The Nigerian Army is strengthening its combat medical support system with new critical-care and medical evacuation capabilities designed to shorten response times, improve casualty survival and preserve troops’ operational effectiveness.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, commissioned the newly completed Waidi Shaibu Critical Care Centre and a modern helipad at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Kaduna on Tuesday.
A statement by the Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele said the facilities reinforce the Army’s commitment to an efficient and responsive healthcare system as an essential component of military operations.
The Critical Care Centre is equipped to manage trauma, intensive care and other complex medical cases, creating greater capacity within the military healthcare system to treat critically injured or ill personnel without unnecessary referrals outside military medical facilities.
Lieutenant General Shaibu said timely access to quality medical care has direct implications for troop morale, recovery rates and overall operational readiness.
He emphasised that the effectiveness of a fighting force extends beyond weapons and platforms to the quality of medical care available to personnel who bear the burden of national security.
The COAS said the Nigerian Army would continue upgrading medical infrastructure across its formations and units to meet contemporary operational and healthcare demands.
The accompanying helipad adds a critical evacuation dimension to the medical capability at 44 NARH. Designed to facilitate the rapid movement of injured personnel from operational theatres to the hospital, the facility is expected to reduce the time between battlefield injury and access to specialist care.
Lieutenant General Shaibu commended the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, under whose leadership the helipad was constructed during his tenure as Chief of Army Staff.
He described the facility as a critical enabler for casualty evacuation, noting that reducing evacuation time could significantly improve the chances of survival and recovery for wounded personnel.
The combined investment in critical care and evacuation infrastructure strengthens the link between battlefield operations and definitive medical treatment, giving commanders greater assurance that casualties can be moved rapidly into an appropriately equipped military healthcare environment.
The COAS also charged medical personnel at 44 NARH to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and ensure the optimal utilisation and maintenance of the newly commissioned facilities.
The development places combat healthcare within the wider operational support architecture of the Nigerian Army, where the speed and quality of medical intervention can influence not only individual recovery but also troop confidence, morale and sustained operational capacity.
