The Federal Government is widening its security strategy beyond conventional military operations by positioning sports as a tool for youth development, talent discovery and long-term national cohesion, with the South-East set to host a new regional basketball championship designed to nurture the next generation of athletes.

A statement by the Special Assistant to the Minister on Media, Leah Katung-Babatunde, disclosed that the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd) announced the initiative during a visit to the Umuahia Township Stadium at the end of his three-day official working visit to Abia State.
General Musa interacted with participants at the inaugural multi-age basketball camp organised by the Crossover Foundation and supported by Nigerian diaspora basketball stars, Godsgift Achiuwa and Precious Achiuwa.
The Minister stated that the planned South-East Regional Basketball Championship will provide a structured platform for identifying and developing emerging talent across the region's five states while encouraging greater youth participation in organised sports. He described grassroots sports development as an important investment in leadership, discipline and social inclusion.
In support of the ongoing basketball camp, the Minister announced an immediate donation of ₦2 million, commending the Crossover Foundation and the Abia State Government for collaborating to expand opportunities for young athletes through improved sports development initiatives.
He also urged parents to encourage their children to embrace organised sports, stressing that athletics plays a significant role in building confidence, teamwork and responsible citizenship. The Minister further revealed that the Armed Forces of Nigeria is preparing targeted sports recruitment initiatives that will provide talented athletes with opportunities to pursue careers in military service.
The visit concluded with the organisers presenting General Musa with a signed basketball in recognition of his support for youth sports development and his commitment to expanding opportunities for young Nigerians.
