Nigeria and Bangladesh are exploring a stronger defence relationship built around training, professional exchanges and capacity development, with both countries seeking closer institutional links between their armed forces.

The direction emerged during a courtesy visit by Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, His Excellency Miah Md. Mainul Kabir, to the Defence Headquarters on Thursday, where discussions focused on expanding existing defence cooperation and identifying areas capable of producing practical gains for both countries.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, underscored the importance of broadening the existing relationship, particularly through enhanced training programmes and professional exchanges designed to strengthen the capacity, competence and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
The emphasis on professional development places human-capital cooperation at the centre of the bilateral defence relationship, offering a pathway for both armed forces to deepen institutional interaction while strengthening capabilities required to respond to evolving security demands.
Earlier, High Commissioner Kabir conveyed Bangladesh’s readiness to deepen bilateral relations with Nigeria, identifying agriculture, defence and security among areas for closer collaboration.
He also highlighted the value of stronger institutional and professional ties between the two countries’ armed forces, particularly as both countries confront emerging security challenges and pursue shared national interests.
General Oluyede appreciated Bangladesh’s continued goodwill towards Nigeria and expressed confidence that the engagement would translate into concrete areas of cooperation.
The latest engagement consequently provides an opportunity to expand Nigeria–Bangladesh defence relations beyond established diplomatic ties towards more practical cooperation in training, professional development and institutional capacity building.
For Nigeria, such partnerships can widen opportunities for military personnel to benefit from international professional exchanges while strengthening relationships that contribute to a broader network of defence cooperation.
