The Tukur Buratai Research Centre has completed six professional development courses designed to strengthen leadership, resilience and command effectiveness across tactical, operational and strategic levels of contemporary counterinsurgency operations.

The four-day curriculum development exercise, held in Abuja from 24 to 27 August 2026, brought together retired senior military officers, academics and specialists in military operations, leadership, resilience, command and security studies. The committee included retired officers from the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy and Nigerian Air Force, giving the exercise a tri-service perspective.
The Director General and Secretary of the TBRC Board of Trustees, retired Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman, disclosed that the completed curricula and course modules were formally submitted on Thursday to the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, retired Lieutenant General TY Buratai, for consideration and further necessary action.
The six courses are Tactical Resilience in COIN, Tactical Leadership and Command in COIN, Operational Resilience in COIN, Operational Leadership and Command in COIN, Strategic Resilience in COIN Environment and Strategic Leadership in COIN Environment.
The curriculum development was centred on the changing demands of contemporary counterinsurgency operations and the ability of military leaders to anticipate, withstand and adapt to operational pressure, uncertainty and adversity while maintaining command effectiveness and mission focus.
The modules also seek to strengthen decision-making, team building, unit cohesion, morale and institutional resilience across different levels of command.
Usman explained that resilience was treated in the curriculum not merely as the capacity to endure adversity, but as a leadership attribute that enables commanders, formations and units to adapt, recover, learn and remain effective under pressure.
The exercise also brought together the operational experience of retired military commanders with contemporary academic and professional perspectives. The multidisciplinary approach was intended to ensure that the resulting courses remain practical, context-specific and responsive to the realities of modern counterinsurgency operations.
The tri-service participation further broadens the professional foundation of the programmes, incorporating operational perspectives from the Army, Navy and Air Force in developing leadership and resilience competencies applicable across command environments.
The completion of the modules marks a development in TBRC's effort to establish structured professional development programmes focused on the human and command dimensions of contemporary military operations.
The Centre said the programmes are expected to provide a structured platform for developing capable, adaptive and resilient leaders able to sustain effective command across tactical, operational and strategic levels.
