The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has unveiled 30 family accommodation units at Ribadu Cantonment, Kaduna, as part of ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Army to improve the welfare and living conditions of personnel and their families.

The newly completed accommodation comprises two blocks of family housing units designed to ease pressure on existing facilities within the cantonment and provide a more conducive living environment for Army personnel. The project forms part of the Nigerian Army’s wider infrastructure development and renewal programme across formations and units nationwide.
Lieutenant General Shaibu said the provision of decent accommodation remained an important component of personnel welfare and administration under his Command Philosophy, noting that the wellbeing of soldiers and their families has implications for morale, motivation and operational effectiveness.
A statement issued by the Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, on 24 September 2026, said the COAS explained that the need for additional accommodation had become more important with the expansion of the Nigerian Army’s force structure and operational reach.
According to the statement, Lieutenant General Shaibu stressed that the growth of the Army must be matched by corresponding investment in infrastructure and welfare facilities required to support personnel and their families.
The COAS noted that Ribadu Cantonment accommodates several Nigerian Army establishments and expressed optimism that the new housing units would help reduce pressure on existing accommodation. He charged beneficiaries to take ownership of the facilities and ensure their proper use and maintenance.
Lieutenant General Shaibu also disclosed that similar accommodation projects were ongoing in barracks and cantonments across the country as part of efforts to rehabilitate ageing infrastructure and provide additional facilities in line with the evolving requirements of the Nigerian Army.
He expressed appreciation to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his continued support and provision of resources towards improving the welfare and living conditions of Nigerian Army personnel and their families.
Earlier, the General Officer Commanding 1 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Abubakar Muhammed Wase, commended the COAS for prioritising troops’ welfare and described the project as timely and morale-boosting.
Major General Wase assured that the facilities would be properly utilised and maintained.
