The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals have intensified enforcement operations across the country as part of renewed efforts to sanitise Nigeria’s solid minerals sector and strengthen compliance with mining regulations.

The specialised enforcement unit said its operational teams, particularly across the South-West region, are recording significant progress in ensuring that mining activities comply with extant laws and regulatory requirements. The renewed drive underscores the Federal Government’s determination to tackle illegal mining and protect the country’s mineral assets.
Commander of the Mining Marshals, Assistant Commandant of Corps (ACC) John Onoja Attah, warned mining operators against violating regulatory requirements, stressing that ignorance of the law would not shield offenders from prosecution.
“Ignorance of the law will never be an excuse. Every operator must ensure that mining activities are conducted within the ambit of the law. Those who choose to operate outside the regulatory framework will face the full weight of legal consequences,” Onoja said.
The Mining Marshals were established as a specialised enforcement mechanism to support reforms in the solid minerals sector and combat illegal mining activities nationwide. The Corps said the intensified operations are aimed not only at curbing unlawful mining but also at protecting legitimate investors, improving revenue generation and restoring regulatory integrity within the sector.
The enforcement campaign is also aligned with the broader reform agenda of the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, which seeks to position mining as a major pillar of economic diversification and national development.
Regulatory compliance, investor protection and the eradication of illegal mining remain central to efforts to strengthen confidence in Nigeria’s mineral sector.
The renewed enforcement effort further reflects the institutional emphasis of the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, on protecting critical national assets and infrastructure. Under his leadership, the Corps has strengthened support for the Mining Marshals as part of wider efforts to curb illegal resource exploitation and associated revenue losses.
The Corps reiterated its commitment to working with relevant regulatory agencies and stakeholders to ensure that Nigeria’s mineral resources are exploited lawfully, safely and sustainably for the benefit of the economy and future generations. With enforcement operations continuing nationwide, the Mining Marshals maintained that compliance with mining regulations remains a fundamental requirement for operators across the sector.
