The Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN) has mourned the 25 people killed in the Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash in Ondo State on Monday, October 6, 2026, describing the incident as a profound national tragedy.

The association expressed deep sadness over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the victims, acknowledging the pain caused by the sudden tragedy.
A statement by the President of the Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria, Odita Sunday, said DECAN also commiserated with the Nigerian Air Force, the Chief of the Air Staff, officers and airmen, and the entire Armed Forces of Nigeria over the loss.
The association acknowledged the courage, dedication and sacrifices of Nigerian Air Force personnel who continue to undertake demanding operations in defence of the country, often under difficult and hazardous conditions.
DECAN urged Nigerians to respect the dignity and privacy of the bereaved families while allowing relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The association also appealed for restraint in the circulation of unverified information, graphic materials and speculative narratives that could compound the anguish of the affected families and the wider military community.
As a professional body whose members cover the Armed Forces and national defence and security affairs, DECAN reaffirmed its commitment to responsible, accurate, compassionate and professional journalism, particularly during moments of national crisis.
The association prayed for strength and fortitude for the families of the deceased and eternal rest for the souls of those who lost their lives in the crash.
