The Director of Media and Advocacy, NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, stated this during the Joint Security Press Briefing hosted at the Office of the National Security Adviser in Abuja on Thursday, 5 November 2026.

Addressing press inquiries regarding airport interdictions and foreign crime perception, he explained that continuous enforcement success has disrupted traditional narrative profiles, driving global cartels to deploy foreign couriers to transport heavy consignments of cocaine, heroin, and synthetic cannabis.

Unmasking Foreign Cartel Networks and Airport Interdiction Breakthroughs

Mr. Babafemi disclosed that during the September–October operational review period, NDLEA airport interdiction teams intercepted three foreign couriers acting on behalf of international cartels, highlighting the arrest of South African nationals Qhina Beauty and Gebashe Sithandiwe Jessie.

The Director explained that while foreign networks attempt to exploit international transit routes, painstaking intelligence tracking is breaking through non-cooperative suspect behavior to unmask masterminds, destination hubs, and cartel logistics managers.

He added that comprehensive bilateral coordination through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is actively addressing broader diplomatic aspects arising from foreign drug arrests across international aviation corridors.

Cross-Border Interpol Operations and Extradition of Fugitive Kingpin

Highlighting major cross-border achievements, Mr. Babafemi revealed that strategic collaboration with Interpol led to the successful tracking and extradition of long-sought drug kingpin Festus Ibewuike from Cotonou, Benin Republic.

Ibewuike had been on the run for over two years after orchestrating a record 49.7-kilogram heroin trafficking operation, marking a major breakthrough in bringing high-level syndicate leaders to account across international borders.

The Agency also secured high-level global recognition during the review period following an official visit by United States Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Michael Gonzales, who commended NDLEA leadership for its operational efficiency and the successful dismantling of four clandestine methamphetamine laboratories.

Aggressive Supply Reduction and Interior Farm Interdictions

Elaborating on overall supply reduction metrics recorded over the eight-week window, Mr. Babafemi reported that operatives executed three hundred and ninety-seven specialized security operations nationwide.

These targeted strikes resulted in three thousand five hundred and eighty-three arrests, the filing of three hundred and ninety-two court cases, three hundred and ninety-six secured convictions, and the total dismantling of one hundred and forty-five organized drug syndicates.

Tactical sweeps dismantled massive illegal cannabis cultivation clusters in interior forested regions across Edo, Anambra, Osun, Ondo, and Taraba States, culminating in the recovery and destruction of an astounding one hundred and seventy-seven thousand, five hundred and thirty-four point four-six kilograms of assorted narcotics, alongside seized cash, illicit firearms, and military-grade ammunition.

The Director paid tribute to six NDLEA security personnel who paid the ultimate price during frontline September operations, reaffirming the Agency's unyielding determination to secure the nation against drug cartels.

Community Demand Reduction and Social Advocacy Expansion

Parallel to kinetic sweeps, NDLEA expanded its drug demand reduction programs across communities, schools, and workplaces.

During the review period, specialized counseling and rehabilitation units successfully treated, counseled, and rehabilitated five hundred and forty-two drug users.

Concurrently, the War Against Drug Abuse social advocacy campaign reached three hundred and thirty-three thousand, four hundred and seventy citizens through four hundred and sixty sensitization programs, reinforced by strategic leadership engagements with traditional rulers, religious figures, and state governors nationwide.

The operational outcomes delivered by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency demonstrate a sophisticated, dual-track posture that balances intense tactical supply disruption with expanded community rehabilitation. By dismantling transnational smuggling networks at international gateways and securing the extradition of fleeing kingpins, NDLEA is effectively severing the financial and operational lifelines of organized cartels.

As national security operations integrate ahead of the 2027 General Elections, sustaining cross-border intelligence partnerships and interior interdiction sweeps will remain essential to protecting public health, fortifying national borders, and projecting decisive state authority.
