The Nigerian Senate has pledged to give the Nigerian Army (NA) it's full support as it fightss to surmount security challenges in the country.
The Committee on Army gave the pledge when the Chairman Senate Committee on Army, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua led members of the Committee on its maiden visit to the Army Headquarters Abuja on Wednesday, 25th October 2023.
Senator Yar’Adua appreciated the efforts of the Nigerian Army in carrying out its constitutional roles while advocating for cooperation between the legislative body and the Nigerian Army.
This he said will help the committee perform its legislative oversight functions in bringing about legislative reforms that will enhance the Army's efforts in actualizing its constitutional responsibilities of defending the territorial integrity of Nigeria as well as guarantee security in the country.
Following a briefing on the operational and administrative activities of the Nigerian Army, the legislators admitted that the Nigerian Army is confronted with daunting security challenges and pledged to provide all the necessary support in ensuring that troops' welfare is catered for adequately with a view to motivating the troops to perform optimally.
The Senate Chairman presented the draft legislative agenda for the Nigerian Army to the Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, and pledged to give priority to the acquisition of necessary enablers to enhance its operational efficiency.
Earlier in a remark, the Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja appreciated the committee for the critical role they play in promoting the effective functioning of the Nigerian Army.
General Lagbaja expressed the appreciation of the Nigerian Army to the committee and acknowledged the importance of the oversight function of the legislature which has guided the Army through the execution of its constitutional roles.
He said the Army cherishes the feedback from the Senate which has helped in redefining ongoing operations while expressing gratitude to the lawmakers for the support rendered to the Army so far since the inauguration of the National assembly.
During the visit, the Senate Committee Chairman on Army presentated a proposed legislative agenda to the Chief of Army Staff, a ducument that contains a blueprint of what the committee intends to achieve through its allocated tenure as Senate Committee on Army.
