The Nigerian House of Representatives Committee on Army says the Nigerian Army, if given all required support from the legislature, will be able to attain greater heights in solving the security challenges in the country.
Chairman House Committee on Army, Honourable Mamuda Abdullahi stated this when the House of Representatives Committee on Army paid its maiden visit to Army Headquarters Abuja.
He applauded the Nigerian Army for doing so wonderfully well under Lieutenant General Lagbaja and assured Nigerians that with what he has seen so far, it is mind blowing what the Army is capable of doing in its commitment to safeguarding Nigerians.
Honourable Mamuda Abdullahi stated that the committee on Army which was constituted recently and inaugurated decided to visit the Army Headquarters which is their primary constituency to understand and know areas of support needed for the Army to succeed.
He applauded the Nigerian Army under the leadership of Lieutenant General Lagbaja for doing so wonderfully well while assuring Nigerians that the Army has shown commitment to safeguarding Nigerians.
"We consider it expedient to come here and familiarise ourselves with the Headquarters. We heard the briefs from the Chief of Army Staff and from it we will draw an ocersite to engage the Nigerian Army"
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja earlier stated that the Nigerian Army is confronted with some challenges in the discharge of its responsibilities which can be addressed through the efforst of the Legislature.
The Chief of Army Staff who recieved members of the Committee alongside his pribcipal Staff Officers expressed appreciation to the Committee for its suport to Nigerian Army's operations and trainings.
The Army Chief assured the members that the officers and men of the Nigerian army are determined and will continue to extend the frontier of peace and stability accross the country, by addressing security challenges in all geopolitical zones of the country.
He expressed the Nigerian Army's readiness, willingness and ability to work in partnership with organisations like the National assembly, leaning on the avenues of the House Committee on Army in discharging its constitutional responsibilities.
"In discharging these responsibilities, the Army is confronted with some challenges which we know through your efforst will be addressed. Our contry currently is confronted with myriads of security challenges which we are grappling with, and with the support of the National assembly we will Surmount"
"We recognise the fact that you speak for your constituencies and we appreciate the feedback we get from you being the representatives of the people, based on these feedbacks we have in no small measure refined our operations and are able to meet expectations of the larger citizenry of the country" stated COAS.
The House of Representatives Committee on the Army has pledged its commitment to ensure the Nigerian Army is placed on a pedestal to tackle the challenges of insecurity facing the country.
It would be recalled that on Tuesday 7th of November 2023, the committee was inaugurated in Abuja. The Chairman of the committee, Hon Abdullahi Mamudu at the inauguration pledged the commitment of the to ensure the Nigerian Army is placed on a pedestal to tackle the challenges of insecurity facing the country.
He said the Committee owes it a responsibility to Nigerians to address insecurity in the country and has developed a four-year work plan that will be judiciously followed within specific periods to achieve its mandate.
“The committee oversight mandate includes:
The Nigerian Army;
Ammunition Depots, Forts, Arsenal, reservations and establishments
Development projects of the Nigerian Army;
Army Barracks, Landed property and appurtenances;
Annual Budget estimates of the Army.”
He said the scope of the committee’s activities also includes oversight of the Nigerian Army recruitment exercise.
