The critical role of strategic decision making by information managers, especially in the military and security sector have been identified as critical to handling issues of national security and safety of citizens within the media space.
The Director General, Voice of Nigeria, Mallam Jibrin Ndace stated this while presenting a paper titled "Combating Fake News: Role Stakeholders in Digital Media" at the Nigerian Army Schools of Public Relations and Information Media Workshop 2023, taking place at the Mohammadu Buhari Cantonment Giri, Abuja.
Mallam Ndace stated that there is a need for stake holders to close the gap between tactical operations and Information sharing with consideration to timeliness of information in the digital era, especially with the presence of social media space.
He stressed the importance of fact checking Information, understanding the media landscape as critical to management and maintainance of public Relations in the era of social media.
"the ever evolving information channels have changed the face of information dissemination and management which requires quick and strategic actions" he stated.
The VON Chief Executive Officer also expressed his desire to use the platform of Voice of Nigeria in helping to stem out the proliferation of Fake news, especially as it regards national security and Nigerian Military operations.
He shared with the participants his personal experience as an embedded journalist in the fight against insurgency in the North East as well as the documentation of his experience in his published work: the trilogy launched in honour of Former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai.
He highlighted timeliness of response, utilising Relationships with the media, proactiveness and lessons to learn from similar incidences as among areas of consideration for any public relations practitioner. The Director General was accompanied by the Director News, Voice of Nigeria Mr. Austeen Elewodalu.
