Canada joins France and UK in recognising Palestinian statehood; Trump warns it threatens trade negotiations.
Former United States President Donald Trump has threatened to derail trade negotiations with Canada after Ottawa announced its intent to recognise the State of Palestine at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly, placing itself alongside the UK and France in a mounting wave of Western diplomatic shifts over Israel’s war in Gaza.
The warning
came a day after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said his country would
formally back Palestinian statehood at the UN’s 80th session in September—on
the condition that the Palestinian Authority carries out significant reforms.
These include holding general elections in 2026 that exclude Hamas and
demilitarising any future Palestinian state.
The
announcement sparked concern in Washington, where Canada and the US are racing
to conclude a trade deal before Trump’s self-imposed August 1 deadline, after
which he has vowed to apply a 35% tariff on all Canadian goods not already
protected under the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement.
Carney,
speaking Wednesday, said recognising Palestine was a necessary step to salvage
the possibility of a two-state solution, calling it a long-held Canadian policy
that is “being eroded before our eyes” amid the humanitarian collapse in Gaza.
“Regrettably,
[a negotiated peace] is no longer tenable,” Carney said, pointing to Israeli
settlement expansion, political instability, and Gaza’s devastation as reasons
for rethinking diplomacy. “Any path to lasting peace for Israel also requires a
viable and stable Palestinian state.”
Canada’s
move comes amid international uproar over Israel’s military campaign in Gaza,
which has killed over 60,000 Palestinians and devastated the territory since
2023. Rights groups and UN officials have raised alarm over starvation
deaths—now at 154, including 89 children—as well as attacks on aid distribution
sites.
While the US
under Trump remains staunchly opposed to recognising Palestinian statehood,
Trump himself has acknowledged that “starvation is clearly taking place” in
Gaza. His Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, is expected in Israel for ceasefire
talks.
France and
the UK have both announced similar plans to recognise Palestine, contingent on
future developments. The Palestinian Authority welcomed Canada's declaration as
“historic.” However, Israel’s embassy in Ottawa condemned it as legitimising
Hamas, whom it blames for the October 7, 2023, attack.
Carney defended
the move as both a humanitarian necessity and a political imperative: “There is
no room for delay in coordinated international action to support peace.”
