The Nigerian Army is marking 162 years of selfless dedication to duty, patriotism, loyalty and commitment to protecting the nation with the Nigerian Army Day Celebration NADCEL 2025 to be hosted by 1 Division in Kaduna State.
The Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede stated this on Wednesday 2nd July, 2025 while briefing Journalists on the Activities marking the Nigerian Army Day Celebration 2025 at the Army Headquarters, Abuja.
General Oluyede who was represented by the Chief of Civil Military Affairs at the briefing, Major General Gold Chibuisi said, the annual event celebrated every 6th of July, commemorate the establishment of the Nigerian Army.
"The Nigerian Army Day Celebration has always offered the Army an opportunity to showcase its achievements, the journey so far as well as deepen collaboration with various stakeholders towards enhancing peace, security and the defence of Nigeria’s national values. "
The Army Chief also said the celebration affords the Nigeria Army the opportunity to recognize and honour the heroic contributions of its officers and soldiers, both past and present.
" The annual event celebrated every 6th of July, was first held in 1978 to commemorate the establishment of the Nigerian Army, marking the day the first shot was fired at Garkem Town in the present-day Cross River State, signifying the commencement of the Civil War"

The Army Chief admits that in recent times, Nigeria has had to contend with the enemies of peace and agents of chaos who have brought terrorism to our borders and caused a plethora of internal security issues. However, the Nigerian Army has risen to the occasion to deny the terrorists the opportunity to disrupt the socio-cultural heritage, or smear the sanctity of the nation's sovereignty.
"In this vein, the Nigerian Army will not relent in its efforts to ensure the security of the Nigerian People and the perpetuity of our democracy" stated the COAS.
The theme of this year's event is “Developing the Soldier First Concept: Imperative for Nigerian Army’s Transformation Drive", is being hearalled by a number of activities including the commissioning of numerous civil-military cooperation projects in different locations within Kaduna State, a golf tournament, free medical outreach programme and the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association charity outreach programme.
There will also be public speaking engagement visits to selected secondary schools in all Nigerian Army Formations, a lecture at Nigerian Defence Academy Kaduna, to deliberate on topical issues, an award ceremony for the 2nd COAS Annual Literary Competition, a Gala Night with officers and soldiers at Umaru Musa Yar’adua Conference Centre Murtala Muhammed Square Kaduna before the Grand Finale on 6 July 2025 that will witness a military parade, equipment display as well as the presentation of the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Award to deserving personnel.
