Nigerian hurdling sensation Tobi Amusan will be among elite female athletes required to undergo a mandatory genetic gender test under new World Athletics rules ahead of the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.
World Athletics has announced sweeping new
eligibility regulations mandating a one-time genetic gender test for all
athletes competing in the female category, with implementation beginning
September 1, 2025. The move affects hundreds of elite athletes globally,
including Nigeria’s World Record Holder and
Hurdles Champion, Tobi Amusan.
The test, which screens for the
presence of the SRY gene typically found on the Y chromosome, will be
administered via cheek swab or blood sample. Athletes who fail to comply will
be deemed ineligible to compete in women’s events at World Athletics–sanctioned
competitions.
World Athletics
President, Sebastian Coe, defended the policy shift as essential to maintaining integrity in
elite women’s sport.
“We are saying, at elite level, for
you to compete in the female category, you have to be biologically female. It
was always very clear to me and the World Athletics Council that gender cannot
trump biology,” Coe said.
He further praised the cooperation of
Member Federations for their “support and commitment” in rolling out the
regulations.
The new rules consolidate previous
frameworks around transgender athletes
and athletes with Differences of Sex
Development (DSD) into a uniform requirement, as recommended by the Gender
Diverse Athlete Working Group.
Tobi Amusan, the reigning world record holder in
the 100m hurdles and 2022 world champion, is currently focused on defending her
national crown at the Nigerian Championships
scheduled for August 1–3 in Lagos. The event marks a key milestone in her
preparation for the Tokyo World Championships,
which begin September 13.
