Africa U-18/U-20 Athletics Championships in Abeokuta says Nigeria’s Igbigbidje James Clifford clocked a
time of 11.44 seconds to in U-18 Heat One of 100m event, finishing just behind
South Africa’s Mukona Manavhela (11.38s) as both athletes qualified for the
semi-finals.
Adeola Adeniji Muideen led Heat Two with 11.08 seconds, while Algeria’s
Bouhdila Yasser followed in 11.14 seconds to also secure a semi-final berth.
Jayen Foure won Heat Three in 10.65 seconds, ahead of Nigeria’s Egbon Destiny
Chinedu (10.85s).
In the U-18 Girls’ 100m, Nigeria’s Mariam Jegede won the first heat in
12.13 seconds, with Congo’s Boukama Gladys (12.47s) and Ghana’s Darkoah Kwateng
(12.64s) placing second and third.
Miracle Ezechukwu dominated Heat Two in 11.79 seconds, beating South
Africa’s Oluchi Ndubueze (11.93s) and Côte d’Ivoire’s Andre Marie Joseph
(12.26s).
Chigozie Rosemary Nwankwo emerged winner of Heat Three in the same event.
In the U-20 Women’s 100m heats, Nigeria’s Lucy Nwankwo achieved a new
personal best of 11.80 seconds (-0.5) to win her heat. Success Oyibu also
claimed victory in Heat One with 11.87 seconds (-1.4).
Earlier in the day- Burkina Faso made an early statement at
the ongoing CAA Africa U-18/U-20 Athletics Championships in Abeokuta by
securing the first gold medal of the competition.
Zango
Salisa clinched gold in the U-18 women’s triple jump with a leap of 12.79m,
edging out Morocco’s Masat Kaota, who jumped 12.39m to take silver.
Tunisia’s Finel Chidi claimed bronze with a mark of 12.26m.
Also, South Africa joined the gold tally as Natro Ler won the U-18 high jump
event with a 2.00m effort.
Nigeria’s Ikeki Daniel and Oddo Melvin secured silver and
bronze, respectively.
The
five-day competition is featuring athletes from 43 African nations and runs
from July 16 to 20.
