The inspection followed widespread rumours linking the Fufore dam project to Sunday’s early morning flood disaster.
Worried by growing speculations that the ongoing construction of a dam at Kofsopah District in Fufore Local Government Area may have triggered the recent flooding in parts of Yola, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri on Wednesday visited the project site for an urgent technical assessment.
The deadly flood, which struck around 1:00am on Sunday, devastated communities including Shagari, Sabon Pegi, and areas near the Distance Learning Centre. According to local authorities, at least 23 people lost their lives, while dozens of homes, farmlands, and properties were submerged in the aftermath.
Speaking to journalists at the inspection site, Governor Fintiri dismissed the fears, noting that early reports found no evidence linking the dam project to the flood.
“The spillway is a natural component of every dam,” the Governor said, but assured residents that he had directed a team of professionals to conduct a full assessment and offer further recommendations.
State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Idris Bande, also weighed in, clarifying that contrary to certain claims, the site was not an illegal mining location. “We were here on Saturday. The water level was stable and unchanged,” he said.
Environmental expert, Professor Liman Tukur, echoed similar sentiments. “This site is safe,” he affirmed. “There is no structural threat from the dam itself.”
The site manager of Pleasing Company, contractor for the dam project, Hussaini Maiwada Baba, also debunked the rumour. “There’s absolutely no connection between this construction and what happened in Yola,” he stressed.
