National trials were held by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria at the Yabatech Sports Complex to select athletes for global meets, including the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

World 100m hurdles record holder, Tobi Amusan, delivered a commanding performance at the 2025 Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) National Trials on Tuesday, storming to victory in a time of 12.57 seconds to clinch her fifth national title.

The trials, held at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos, served as a key preparatory event for athletes eyeing qualification for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September.

Amusan exploded off the blocks and maintained her rhythm throughout, finishing comfortably ahead of Adaobi Tabugbo (13.03s) and Faith Osamuyi (13.36s), who took second and third place respectively.

In the men’s 400m, Gafar Badmus emerged national champion, clocking 45.71 seconds. He edged out Ezekiel Asuquo (46.29s) and David Akhalu (46.91s) in a competitive race.

There was drama in the women’s 400m, as multiple-time champion Patience Okon-George was disqualified in the final. Rising African U-20 star Favour Onyah took full advantage, claiming gold in 52.69s, ahead of Opeyemi Deborah Oke and Anita Enaruna.

The women’s 100m sprint produced another upset. Chioma Nweke, also an African U-20 champion, dethroned defending champion Olayinka Olajide with a winning time of 11.27s, marking her first national title. Olajide finished second in 11.39s, with Iyanuoluwa Bada placing third in 11.45s.

The AFN Trials not only reaffirmed the dominance of established stars like Amusan, but also spotlighted a new generation of Nigerian athletes poised to make their names on the international stage.
